Using WS_FTP LE for File Transfers

These instructions will guide you through configuring WS_FTP LE to transfer files between your computer and your Santel web site.

Step 1 - Request Web Access

In order for you to upload files, you need to have web access activated for your account. This can be accomplished by sending an e-mail message to info@santel.net and requesting that your account be given web access. If you do not actually upload anything within two months after being given web access, it will be removed from your account and you will specifically have to request it again when you are ready to use it. There is no charge to have web access activated for your account.

You can tell if you have web access for your account by testing your assigned web space in your web browser:

http://www.santel.net/~username

Replace username with your actual username (in all lowercase letters). If you get a directory listing, then you have web access already. If you get a message that indicates that the address could not be found, then you don't have web access. If you are in doubt, send a message and ask!

Step 2 - Download WS_FTP LE

If you haven't already done so, please download WS_FTP LE and install it on your computer.

WS_FTP LE Download Site

After you download the file to your computer (remember to keep track of the name of the directory or folder you save it in!), run the file to install the program. Remember to indicate that you are a home, non-commercial user to qualify for the free version of this program and for the installation to work successfully.

Step 3 - Open WS_FTP LE and create a Session Profile

NOTE: You will need to be actively connected to the Internet to use WS_FTP LE. It would be a good idea to log on before starting the WS_FTP LE program.

Once you open or start WS_FTP LE, the first screen you will see is the Session Profile screen, which will look similar to this:

  1. You will need to enter the following settings in your Session Profile:

    Profile Name: My Homepage
(or whatever you want to name it)
    Host Name: ftp.santel.net
    Host Type: Unix (standard)
User ID: Insert your username here
(this is the same username you use to log on to Santel Internet and needs to be in all lowercase letters)
    Password: Insert your password here
    (again, in all lowercase letters)

  2. If you wish, you may choose to save your password so that you don't have to enter it each time you log in with WS_FTP LE. If you wish to enable this time saving feature, check the box marked "Save Pwd".

  3. Be sure the Anonymous box is unchecked. Once you are finished here, click on the StartUp tab at the top of the screen and enter public_html as your Initial Remote Host Directory. Do not enter any other information beyond this.
When you are finished entering these settings, click on the OK button and you will be connected to Santel Internet.

BE PATIENT! Messages will scroll through the bottom part of the program box that describe what it is doing. It takes a little while for it to get connected. You will know that you are correctly connected because you will get a directory listing in the right window.

These programs are notorious for locking up. If this happens to you, don't panic. Just close down the box and start over.

You will only need to set up a Session Profile the first time you use WS_FTP LE. The settings will be there the next time you use the program. If you set up more than one Session Profile, which you may do if you have more than one directory that you want to connect to or more than one website that you maintain, you can choose your Profile Name from the dropdown list.

Step 4 - Transferring Files Back and Forth

Now that you are logged on to your Santel Internet website, the WS_FTP LE screen should look similar to this:

As shown above, the left hand window displays the directories and files on your local hard drive, and the right hand window displays the directories and files on your Santel Internet website. To transfer files from one window to the other, simply click once on the file you wish to transfer, which will cause it to be highlighted, then click once on the arrow between the two windows which points in the direction that you wish to transfer the tile to. If the window on the left hand side does not show the directory where your files are stored, you can change directories either by clicking on the ChgDir button or by clicking on a different drive name (such as [-d-]) or by clicking on the double dots (..) at the top of the directory listing.

Tips and Suggestions

  1. Directly below the local and remote windows, there are three buttons labeled ASCII, Binary and Auto. For best results, image files such as gif or jpg should be uploaded in Binary mode. All html files should be uploaded in ASCII mode. To avoid problems with selecting the correct file type, you may wish to have the Auto box checked at all times.

  2. Filenames are case sensitive! Index.html and index.html are not considered to be the same filename once these files are on Santel's server. It is recommended that you always name your files in all lowercase letters.

  3. Usernames and passwords are case sensitive too! All usernames and passwords assigned by Santel Internet are lowercase and need to be entered this way.

Additional Features

WS_FTP LE also allows you to create new directories, delete directories, and delete and rename files on the server (remote system). These features are available by choosing the buttons to the right of the Remote System window.

FTP Directory

Everyone who has web access activated for their account will have an FTP directory. In this directory is a good place for you to store many things, especially images or files that are too big to send via e-mail. Simply upload the image or file into this FTP directory and direct the intended recipient, via email, of the address where the image or file is located. The recipient can then visit the address at their convenience and save the image or file to their local computer. The address for the examples above would be http://www.santel.net/~stekl/ftp

Step 5 - Ending your FTP Session

To disconnect from your Santel Internet web site, click on the Close or Exit buttons at the bottom of the screen. As mentioned above, the next time you connect with WS_FTP LE, your session profile will be saved for you. Simply make sure you have the right profile, and choose OK.

Step 6 - Viewing your web page

To view the page you just uploaded, use the following URL in your web browser:

http://www.santel.net/~username/filename

Substitute username with your actual username (in all lowercase letters). Substitute filename with the name that you gave your file. (If you named your file index.html or index.htm, then you only need to enter the URL as http://www.santel.net/~username as index.html and index.htm are default files that are looked for first.)

To view your image or file in your FTP directory, use:

http://www.santel.net/~username/ftp/filename

once again, substituting the username and filename for your actual username and filename.
