21st Century Community Learning Centers Grant
CHARACTER COUNTS!

The Grant
The DIAL Consortium's 21st Century Community Learning Center grant and the original Afterschool grant were awarded in May of 2000. It included 17 school districts in South Dakota. Each school district has developed a community-learning center based within a school in their district. The learning center runs programs for all age groups.

Seventeen school districts were within the grant and were split into three clusters. The Mid-Central Cluster was composed of the districts of Armour, Burke, Colome, Corsica, Gregory, Kimball, Mt. Vernon, Plankinton, Platte, Stickney, and White Lake. The High Plains Cluster included Alpena, Sanborn Central, Wessington, Wessington Springs, and Woonsocket. The final cluster was located in Agency Village at the Tiospa Zina tribal school. The current grant is called the WWALE group, which includes Woonsocket, Wessington, Sanborn Central (formerly Artesian/Letcher) and Ethan.

Project Continuation
We continue to seek sources throughout the years of the project to help develop funding to continue the programs. These sources may come from community sources, fees for programs or federal programs for licensed after school programs.

Goals

  • To provide a community based learning environment

  • To provide in-school monitoring and tutoring through extended day/extended year academic assistance

  • To provide fine arts/humanities education to the students

  • To develop better intergenerational knowledge and understanding

Student Programs

  • Rebel's Club E3 (Afterschool Program)
The program provides a safe and educationally rich environment for your children after school. The program is open to children in grades K-8. During afterschool we have snacks for the kids, play games and have activities, art projects, homework and quiet time. There will be days that we will take field trips or do community service. The parents will know about these activities before the activities occur. Hours are 3:15 - 5:30 p.m. on the days school is in session.

  • Tutoring
The tutoring program runs on Tuesdays and Thursdays after school from 3:45 - 5:00 p.m. or as needed. If we don't have school or school is dismissed early we will not have the tutoring session for that day.
Recreational Programs
  • Flag Football
  • Basketball
  • Tumbling
  • Spring Soccer

Summer Programs

  • Nature and Craft Camp
  • Reading and Fishing Camp
  • Historical Tour Camp
