When I set out to convert a car to run on electricity I
didn't think the biggest obstacle would be finding the car body, I
thought any old car would work.
I did my homework and then set a budget. The best car I could find
for under $1000 was a 1997 Ford Escort. I looked locally and could
not find anything that fit the bill, so I ended up buying a car 350
miles away from a dealer that was going out of business.
The links to the left show the configuration of the car as of April
2008. I plan to make upgrades to the car as finances allow. My goal
is highway speeds with a minimum range of 30 miles.
The current configuration is 4 AGM batteries (48v), with a golf cart
controller. This yields a range of 18 miles @ 25Mph.
Over the summer I plan to replace the controller with a Curtis 1221
that I am rebuilding and upgrading to 120v, 600 amp. The progress
that I have made so far is a good indication that I will meet my
goal of 30 miles of driving at 65Mph. |
