Dimock, South Dakota
The railroad was built the Rome in 1885. The town of Rome eventually
changed it's name to Starr, and after several years had passed it was changed
once more. In 1911, the town became known us as Dimock, SD.
The railroad
has played a big part in the history of our little town. For example,
before 1914 Dimock did not yet have a jail, so when people caused trouble
and needed to be punished they were locked in railroad boxcars. At
one time they even put a man in a boxcar and accidently forgot about him.
Later, when they remembered, the train had already left. The
man had been taken to Sioux City, and it was because of this mishap that
a jail was built. ("Memories of a Pioneer Daughter"; Pauline Neugebauer
Misterik, 1981.)
The railroad has also used as
means of personal transportation, and for hauling grain, and other
products into and out of the community.
